The Maha Kumbha Mela, one of the largest and most sacred gatherings in the world, is a celebration of faith, culture, and spirituality that draws millions of pilgrims to the banks of sacred rivers in India. For the 2025 edition, Indian photographer Nilanjan Ray will capture the profound essence of this historic event through his lens. Known for his ability to capture intimate and powerful moments in nature and human life, Ray’s photographs will offer a rare glimpse into the sacred rituals of the Kumbha Mela. With a focus on the central ritual of bathing in the river, Ray’s work will showcase the purity and devotion of pilgrims as they immerse themselves in the water, seeking blessings and the nectar of immortality.

The Kumbha Mela is marked by colorful processions, where monks from various akharas march in elaborate ceremonies, symbolizing unity and devotion. Ray’s photos will capture the vibrancy and energy of these processions, from the majestic elephants and musicians to the solemn and powerful figures of the sadhus. The tradition of shahi snan, where the most revered monks take their ceremonial dip first, is a significant event that sets the tone for the entire festival. Through his stunning imagery, Ray will provide an evocative portrayal of the joy, spirituality, and reverence that permeate this unique gathering, offering viewers a chance to experience the mysticism of the Maha Kumbha Mela 2025 from the comfort of their own homes.

Back in 2006, I picked up Dan Brown’s “Angels and Demons,” and it was as though a curtain lifted, revealing a world of wonder. Italy’s streets, its mesmerizing art and culture, the hidden secrets of the Vatican, and the rich tapestry of its history unfurled before me, igniting a deep curiosity within. This book didn’t just make an impression; it etched itself into my mind, sparking an insatiable desire to explore Italy further. I immersed myself in books and films about Italy, dreaming of the day I might walk those storied streets myself. Never did I imagine that day would come so unexpectedly.

In 2022, fortune smiled upon me when I become first in Travel category at the Urban Photo Festival in Italy. An invitation to this vivid, artistic haven landed in my lap. Though the prospect of bearing the travel costs gave me pause, the festival organizers graciously covered my hotel in Trieste. “You can’t miss this chance to visit your dream country!” my wife insisted. Her words were a catalyst, and soon enough, I was packing my bags. It all happened in a whirlwind, and one crisp October evening, I found myself in the quaint town of Trieste.

Arriving at twilight, Trieste greeted me with quiet streets and the challenge of navigating an unfamiliar city without knowing Italian. The language barrier quickly became apparent when I boarded the wrong bus, eventually finding a train to the Trieste station, where I arrived around 10:00 pm. The ancient town shimmered under the sodium lights, exhaustion competing with the town’s nighttime beauty as I captured it with my camera. However, my hotel was nowhere to be found, and the realization that it was closed upon arrival was shocking. Panic seized me until I found another hotel to book for the night.

The following two days were a blur of exploration and festival events. I found a helpful Bangladeshi shopkeeper who assisted me in purchasing an Italian SIM card, easing my transition into the rhythm of Trieste. The town, though small, was host to 30 festival venues, and I reveled in the opportunity to meet like-minded people and soak up the atmosphere.

After the festival’s dinner party, I boarded a train to Venice. Within minutes of my arrival, I was swept into a throng of tourists by the riverbank. Navigating the crowded ticket counters, I eventually secured a ferry ticket. The canals of Venice, a maze of alleys that confused even Google Maps, held a magic all their own. I found my hotel, left my bags, and wandered through Venice, tasting the best pizza and savoring every sight.

As night descended, Venice transformed into a scene from a fairy tale. Gondolas glided through the darkened canals, cafés bustled with life, and I indulged in gelato by the river’s edge. Venice at night was a princess cloaked in mystery, but my time there was all too brief. As I stood on the banks, I realized that at least two days were needed to feel the charm of Venice.

The next morning, the ferry carried me to a different face of Venice, and from there, I traveled to Milan before heading to Interlaken, Switzerland. Milan’s grand station posed a challenge as my train wasn’t listed on the board. Station police, in a rush themselves, guided me just in time. Finally, I caught the train, my eyes glued to Google Maps as we sped toward my final destination: Rome.

Arriving in Rome, a mix of excitement and confusion set in as Google Maps led me astray. Yet, with the help of locals, I found my hotel. The area around Rome Termini was bustling with fellow Bangladeshi people, adding a touch of familiarity. Over the next three days, I wandered Rome’s streets, savoring vegetable pizzas and the finest gelato.

Rome, with its nighttime charm, was a city transformed. The Colosseum, the Pantheon, and the Trevi Fountain stood timeless, their ancient allure irresistible. Tourists lounged at cafes, music filled the air, and the cobblestone streets whispered stories of the past. Rome felt like a living museum, a place where history and art converged in breathtaking harmony.

Vatican City was an unexpected wonder. Though access was limited to the museum, Michelangelo’s masterpieces left me speechless. The Vatican’s mystery was endless, and as I stood on the bridge over the Tiber River, the chilly wind carried me back through Rome’s storied past. Each brick seemed steeped in history, every corner an artwork.

Despite the fatigue in my legs from the long walks, I cherished every moment in this city of endless allure. As dusk settled over Vatican City, the cold wind whispered that it was time to say goodbye to Rome. But the echoes of its mysteries and wonders would linger in my heart, a testament to the endless enchantment of Italy.

When life felt heavy, I would gaze out the window, drawn to the world’s vibrant beauty. Different cultures and rituals fascinated meHowever, a gift of a small camera from my sister-in-law in Florida sparked a new path. Needless to say, I worked more than 17 years in corporate sector. Recently, I am working as a freelancer.

Behind the lens, I lose myself, forgetting all worries.

My work has been recognized with the Aashahi Shimbun and winner in Xposure International Award, Urban Photo Festival Award in Italy, and Chromatic Photography Travel Contest. With 179 photos published on 1x.com, my photography has graced national and international magazines like National Geographic and Amnesty International.

There is no sound outside the window. The city of Dhaka is hushed in a complete shutdown due to political unrest. No internet, no Facebook, no Instagram, no Netflix. It’s the perfect time to reminisce about my trip to Cherrapunji. I’m unsure where to begin. Initially, I obtained an Indian visa to visit Ladakh, but when my plans fell through, I opted for a solo journey.

That’s when the idea to visit Cherrapunji during the monsoon (July 2023) came to me. I was anxious about whether I would enjoy this trip alone and return successfully, a feeling that always grips me at the start of a journey. Honestly, I felt a bit nervous! I had heard Cherrapunji was most beautiful during the monsoon, but since my visa didn’t allow entry through Dawki, I took a different route from Bangladesh.

Dhaka–Agartala–Shillong–Cherrapunji:

I boarded a train from Dhaka to Akhaura, Cumilla, reaching the Agartala border in three hours, and entered Tripura. After a brief rest, I explored the enigmatic Ujjayanta Palace, a glorious and historical marvel, despite the sweltering, humid weather. The next day, I flew from Tripura to Shillong, landing in less than an hour. I caught a shared taxi to the bustling Shillong bazaar, where I arrived around noon. Moving through the crowd with large luggage was difficult, and I had no choice but to wait on the open road. I hired a private taxi to take me to my hotel in Cherrapunji. The journey was slow, leaving the chaos of the city behind as I entered my dreamland. By 3:00 PM, I reached the hotel. Along the way, I witnessed a magical scene: clouds descending upon the mighty, colossal valley. I quickly took out my camera and snapped this incredible moment to share in my photo story.

Checking into the hotel took almost an hour, and I had already booked another hotel in Shillong for my return after three days. When I left the hotel for lunch, it was 5:00 PM. I rushed to a restaurant for a late lunch, catching the beautiful dusk settling over Cherrapunji. The next day, I headed to the bazaar to find a shared taxi to the famous Double Decker Living Root Bridge. Surprisingly, I couldn’t find a single one, so I hired a private taxi for 2,000 rupees. The weather was hot and humid, without a single cloud to shield me from the sun’s harsh rays. When I left the taxi to begin the trek to the bridge, I learned I had to descend more than 3,500 steps!

I hired a schoolboy as a guide since he charged only 500 rupees. As I descended, I grew weak and thirsty. Nearing the bridge, I felt my head spinning under the oppressive heat. The absence of rain during the rainy season seemed strange. I witnessed firsthand how climate change has impacted Cherrapunji’s weather. The constant rain typical of this time was nowhere to be seen. Exhausted, I sat and lay down on the path, feeling unconscious for a while, thinking I might have to turn back. However, after resting for about 20 minutes, I felt rejuvenated and decided to push on. About 20 minutes later, I reached my destination: the Double Decker Bridge. Many tourists were there, including one from Argentina. After resting for three hours, I began the arduous journey back. It was an exhausting experience. I wouldn’t recommend visiting as a day trip; it’s best to stay overnight.

Climbing up the 3,500 stairs, I finally reached my car and noticed clouds gathering in the sky. No more traveling for the day; it was time to return to the hotel. Over the next two days, I visited Seven Sisters Falls, Mawsynram, and the Living Root Village. Finally, I saw rain, though not the incessant downpour typical of the monsoon. My photos clearly show how diminished the waterfalls were due to the lack of rain.

Conclusion:

Returning to Shillong, I took a flight to Agartala and realized that my three days in Cherrapunji had passed in the blink of an eye. After experiencing the wild beauty of Cherrapunji, I felt suffocated in the crowded city of Shillong, so I locked myself in my hotel for the rest of the day. Early the next morning, I caught a flight back to Agartala. On the return journey, I took a CNG, had lunch, and headed directly to the Akhaura border by 1:00 PM. It took only half an hour to complete the border check, and by 2:00 PM, I was at Akhaura train station, catching a train that brought me back to Dhaka by evening. Reflecting on this trip and the photos, I see Cherrapunji’s melancholic beauty. It somehow reminds me that every mountain stands alone, like a man. Perhaps I’ll carry the silence of Cherrapunji within me for the rest of my life…

The ruins of Hampi sprawl over an area of around 26 square kilometers, comprising numerous temples, palaces, gateways, and other structures that reflect the grandeur and architectural brilliance of the Vijayanagara Empire. The site is situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra River, surrounded by rocky terrain and lush greenery, adding to its picturesque charm.

One of the most iconic landmarks of Hampi is the Virupaksha Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, which stands as a testimony to the architectural marvels of the Vijayanagara period. The temple complex includes intricately carved pillars, courtyards, and a towering gopuram (entrance tower). Another notable temple is the Vittala Temple, famous for its exquisite stone chariot, musical pillars, and captivating sculptures.

Apart from its religious significance, Hampi also served as a center of trade, culture, and learning during its heyday. The remnants of markets, bazaars, and residential areas provide insights into the vibrant life of the medieval city. The landscape of Hampi is dotted with giant boulders, which are not only a natural wonder but also serve as a backdrop to the architectural wonders of the site. Visitors can explore the ruins by foot, bicycle, or even on a coracle ride along the Tungabhadra River.

I captured thousands of photographs on this journey. It was challenging to capture that particular moment and atmosphere, but I did it. Finally, I got some of my dream shots to showcase in this photo story.

About Vedant Kulkarni

I have been studying photography for the last eight years. When Dnyaneshwar Vaidya became my guru, he taught me disciplined photography, how to execute it, and how to convey its essence to people. Currently, I’m capturing travel stories, landscapes, and astrophotography, striving to showcase the natural, geographical, traditional, and historical beauty of our country to the world. I firmly believe that 90% of photography is learned through experience.

Photography, like any other art form, is a culmination of years of hard work, experience, time, money, study, endurance, and honesty. During my journey, I’ve had the opportunity to capture many Indian traditions through my lens. I’ve also explored many unknown places, capturing their beauty in my stories.

My efforts have been recognized with two Photography Distinctions, 15 gold medals, three silver medals, one bronze medal, and nine other awards in Federation of Indian Photography competitions. I am sincerely committed to presenting the sanctity, culture, and beauty of India to the world through my photography.

“Teacher is the name of one incarnation of God”

The teacher, Mr. Deep Narayan Nayak, has painted blackboards on the walls of houses and taught children on the streets from 2019 to the present day, after the local school shut down due to COVID-19 restrictions imposed nationwide in March 2021.

Deep Narayan Nayak Sir teaches everything from nursery rhymes to the importance of wearing masks and washing hands to about 60 students and is known as the ‘Teacher of the Street’ to the grateful villagers. He continues to work for these children and the disadvantaged, endeavoring to illuminate them through education or providing arrangements for their livelihood.

In this manner, the sincere and endless efforts of a true teacher persist. He ensures their food, education, and physical fitness. His sole aim is to enlighten these neglected children for the betterment of the next generation. Efforts are made to educate the parents of these children as well, ensuring that the future generation is not deprived of education in any way.

Through his own efforts, he arranged vaccines for the children in the COVID situation, even reaching villages where electricity has not yet reached with a single effort post-independence. Handicraft workshops have been initiated for disadvantaged girls so that they too can live with dignity. He has extended his activities in all directions to bring light to the lives of the helpless.

About Soumayan Biswas

“Hello, my name is Soumayan Biswas. So far, I haven’t had much experience or opportunity to talk or write about myself. However, I have a keen interest in documenting the lives of ordinary people through storytelling. My journey with photography began in a similar way, and although I am still learning, I draw inspiration from observing the work of others.

I come from a modest middle-class family where photography was initially just a hobby. That’s how I first picked up a camera. As I delved deeper into the world of photography, I encountered many talented individuals, and my passion for this art form grew significantly.

I actively participate in photography competitions and have been honored at both national and international levels. However, my true joy lies in the act of capturing moments through my lens. My goal is to continue nurturing this passion and to keep learning and growing as a photographer.

For me, the essence of photography is everlasting love, and I aspire for it to remain a constant in my life. I look forward to learning from others and evolving in my craft in the days to come. That’s all I can think of sharing for now.”

Like every other metro city across the globe, New Delhi is also changing fast – socio-economically, culturally as well as architecturally. It has still remained a horizontal city (unlike Mumbai or New York which had to grow vertically), but is slowly becoming a maze of flyovers and bridges. Most of these belong to the municipal authorities while the rest belong to the Delhi Metro Railways. While the authorities are trying to convert the space below these flyovers to landscaped gardens, some are still abandoned belonging to the drug-addicts or homeless at night.

One of those non-descript flyovers in East Delhi is however different. The barren space below, with a few trucks parked in one half, comes alive with innocent voices every working day from 9 am till 4 pm. A free school runs there for the last 15 years for under-privileged children from the slums nearby along theYamuna River. The school was started with just a few children by one good Samaritan Mr. Rajesh Sharma and a few of his friends in 2006. Rajesh, who couldn’t complete his own college education due to lack of money, kept his kitchen running by running a grocery shop. But he was determined that children in the neighborhood shouldn’t suffer the same fate and the school came into being – without any building, class rooms, benches or any other infrastructure. It never received any registration, but slowly grew as more children joined and a few more good Samaritan started teaching around 15 years ago. The school now has around 70 students (boys in the morning, girls in the afternoon) learning language to Mathematics to History.

This story is not unique, but it is different. It is different solely due to rare humanity peeping out of every layer of the story – Rajesh or the other teachers never received any money for their devotion, the school was never evicted by the authorities for occupying public space, nobody asked a few art college students to paint the walls or donate black boards, nobody asked some good men and women to donate some money or school uniform once in a while and nobody asked people like me to tell this story.

The last day I went there about a year ago, I saw a small idol of Lord Ganesha (the Hindu elephant god – the god of wealth) lying in the dust in one corner with the students studying at a distance. These young boys were studying just to get the blessings of Lord Ganesha- to earn a decent living, I thought. As I walked out of that space, I saw a flower starting to bloom on a plant that these children must have watered for months. Change is inevitable, but this one is so good!!

About Aniruddha Guha Sarkar

I live in New Delhi, am an Engineer by education, a part of the top management of an American I.T Services companyby profession and a learning photoartist by passion. Having been bored to death by corporate nothingness in various parts of the world for nearly 25 years, I took to the streets with my camera around 7 years back in search of a more meaningful life.

For the first 4 years of my journey, I followed the trends of street photography. I have never been into competitions seriously, but during this time, some of my work got exhibited in various international group exhibitions (e.g. in a few Italian cities, Moscow, Hamburg, Dubai etc.) and printed in various international/ national magazines. I am also a member of iN-PUBLiC and In-street collectives.

Artistic passion for creating a work of art and the craving for the joy when such rare occasions happen were always there in me and will be there in future too. However, I felt a growing need a few yearsagothat before trying to become an artist, one must first understand the time and place that one lives in and their socio-political evolution. The moments that I express in my images must come out of such deep experiences. I am therefore trying street documentaries on social themes these days – in order to be myself. Over the last year or so, I figured out through my failures how much subject matter understanding, time (which I don’t have – due to my professional commitments) and dedication such street documentaries take! Despite such limitations, going deeper to understand and express the time and place that I live in remains the only responsible direction that I can take and that’s what I keep trying.

And this time it was a dark gloomy evening when I left home and reached the fairyland of my city Kolkata named Park Street where rain blends with vivid lights and makes the street looks like a lucid dream.

And when it pours I just keep my camera shutter open n let it capture the mood to keep it as the way it is. In my imagination evening rain is an amazing fusion of colours, lights, moods and fairy droplets.

Everything was a crazily beautiful experience for me that evening, either it’s simply a commuter holding an umbrella with his shadow on the middle of the road or simply the play of light n colours on the wet seat of scooter waiting there, either it’s the mysteriously vibrant car found on street in rain or the dreamy watery texture of car glass. I found magic everywhere and later bagged a story to share with you.

The images are from the traditional Kaalapootu (Bull Surfing ) held mostly in villages in North Kerala. The race takes place during the post-harvest season in August and lasts from noon until dusk. In southern Kerala, these events are held under the name “Maramadi”. Though the events are held in water filled paddy fields after harvest, many of the Panchayaths and private individuals own specially maintained fields exclusively for this event.

Kaalapootu is a celebration of the villagers. They gather in large numbers for the event. Kaalapootu, is also a celebration of the strong bonding of human, animal and nature. It is a beautiful symphony created by the fertile mud, water, men and the bulls. In the air charged with excitement and fervor from the “arpuvilikal” ( acclamation ) ,it is the farmers dreams and longing that reverberates in the atmosphere. We witness the natural, spontaneous ushering in of a new season in the ambience of a simple, tranquil village now heady with excitement. The over powering energy and unbeatable enthusiasm of the event, symbolize the indomitable spirit of the villagers.

The bulls are purchased for huge prices and are specifically fed , trained and well groomed for this traditional race. Some are even provided with air conditioned rooms and regularly given traditional ayurvedic treatment and put on special diet. The bull guides are called “pooter” in Malayalam and the half-naked “Pooters” hang onto the tail or a harness of the animal and skim through the mud surface. They are physically enviably fit, well trained and professional .They start training from a very young age and there are “pooters’ who are just school students !

The images shared are from a Kaalpootu event held at Penumanna, near Kozhikode, Kerala. The organizers feel that these events will bond the villagers together and encourage youngsters to carry on the tradition.

The streets of Kolkata have intrigued me for decades, enticing me with all the ingredients of drama and intrigue. I have an equal penchant for the rain, and have, at times, played with the nuances of a shower with my camera. There were stray instances, more due to requests, that I did portraits too. But deep inside, there was a seed growing which would redefine the way a portrait and a shower would come together. This seed demanded an insane amount of patience and fortune, as the picture that I drew inside was something extraordinary. This seed would only germinate under the perfect weather, when the perfect person matching my crazy would come across.

So, when the skies loomed with a threat this season, all I saw was an opportunity. Three ladies, with all the passion and love for the rains manifested in my life at the same time, as if the heavens were in cahoots with fate to hand me a winner.

As the monsoon came and receded, it was a dance with lady luck with neither of us showing our cards. I shot in front of the clouds, and on the holy waters of the Ganges on the ghats of Kumartuli area of north Kolkata, India. At times the shots were taken under heavy showers and even during thunderstorms. The ladies I shot were invested one hundred percent, as they did not hesitate to submerge, drench and dunk in the waters, both from above and under. I had my terms laid rigidly- that my subject would be the monsoon, and that it didn’t matter if they looked good or not. None complained, and gave me a bounty of fantastic shots.

The next part was what mattered most. There was perhaps no record of any photographer exhibiting his work on the very location where they were shot especially on a ghat. It was unheard of, and even more unthinkable under the monsoon clouds of Kolkata. That was my challenge to myself. Perhaps, such a feat had not ever been attempted before, as far my knowledge goes.

Therefore, one cloudy evening in Kolkata, on the very steps of the ghat where I shot the series, thirty-three canvasses were put up on easels, facing the mighty Ganges. A photo book containing the very photographs as were exhibited, was released on the occasion. The event was accentuated by the appearance of the gifted members of the famous musical group Chandrabindoo, who lend a tangy flavour to the evening with their words and music. The band had never been to such a set where spontaneity was the order of the day. It was an evening of romance, with the rains just holding their pour for the skies to peek at my works.

About Siddhartha Paul

Siddhartha’s journey has by no means been smooth or easy, he is a common man with a routine job, who has struggled in his domestic life. What had begun as only the documentation of his avid traveling and wanderlust, underwent many twists of life and fate to become the apex of the street genre it is today.

Diagnosed with severe eyesight issues and suspected eye cancer, almost put an end to his passion for photography leaving him physically and mentally broken, with no clear path to move ahead, this deep thinking and sensitive man, did not stop embracing life with whatever little he had. Being forbidden to get out in the bright sun, he continued to take pictures from within his room and in the evening. He fell in love with the old charms of the city anew. He fell in love with something so many of us take for granted, his eyesight.
