I am Showrav Chowdhury, hailing from Habiganj, Bangladesh. Currently, I am pursuing my undergraduate degree while passionately pursuing photography. Growing up in a middle-class family, pursuing my passion for photography was quite challenging. My journey into the world of photography commenced in 2019 when I completed the Basic Photography Course offered by the Shahjalal University Photographers’ Association (SUPA).

However, it wasn’t until the end of 2020 that I truly grasped the profound art of photography. At that time, I used my father’s mobile phone because I did not have a camera of my own. Gradually, I found myself immersed in the captivating world of street photography. I am committed to learning and growing every day, drawing inspiration from every source, and actively sharing my knowledge with others. This continuous process has significantly contributed to my growth as a photographer.

My work has had the privilege of being exhibited in numerous national and international exhibitions. Notably, I achieved the First Runner-Up position in HIRAERH 5 – An Intra SUST Photography Exhibition and clinched victory in the Sylhet Photo Contest organized by the Sylhet Photographic Society (SPS). Additionally, I was honored with the title of ‘The Best Shot of 2021’ by FRSTHAND.

My accomplishments also include being selected as a finalist in the HIPA “NATURE” 2021-22 Season 11 General Category (Color), earning the distinction of Finalist in the Documentary Family Award in 2020, and receiving the prestigious Best Story Award in 2021 at the ‘Photography for Social Change’ event, arranged by the International Republican Institute (IRI).

In my opinion, a photograph should generally convey a story or prompt the viewer’s interpretation. My photos strive to contain elements of interest and surprise, contrasts and similarities, and idiosyncrasies amidst colors, textures, and patterns of life. Street photography, to me, goes beyond simply capturing pictures of people and scenes on the street. It involves capturing the essence of the moment, the emotions, the stories, and the culture, which serve as testimonials of time for the future. Street photographers must appreciate the culture, history, and social issues that surround the places and people they photograph.

As a perpetual learner in the field of street photography, I frequently revisit the works of Henri Cartier-Bresson, whose artistry continues to inspire me. I am also deeply influenced by the captivating photographs of Vivian Maier, Fan Ho, and Maciej Dakowicz. Within the Indian context, the enduring works of Raghubir Singh and Raghu Rai serve as perennial sources of inspiration. Currently, I actively follow the works of Vineet Vohra and Prashant Godbole, who inspire me with their contemporary approaches.

About Goutam Maiti

I am a senior professional in an Indian Edutech Business based in Kolkata, and alongside my career, I have dedicated the past 9 years to practicing visual storytelling as a documentary and street photographer. My focus lies in capturing the lives of people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, aiming to portray their intimate moments and the vibrant essence of street life.

While I initially explored subjects like wildlife and landscapes, it was through street photography that I found true fulfillment. The fleeting and unique moments, the interplay of success and failure, all deeply resonated with me, leading me to realize that this was the path I had been searching for. Through my photography, I am able to express my personal perception of the world and embark on a journey of self-discovery.

I am grateful to have had my work recognized and published by esteemed platforms and publications. These include Nat Geo Daily Dozen, IPA Magazine, Lensculture, Chiiz Magazine, as well as several international street photography platforms such as Street Photography Gallery, Street Photography in the World, Progressive Street, Street Core Photography, and Street in B&W, among others. These accolades serve as motivation for me to continue my photographic journey, capturing moments that tell compelling stories and evoke emotions in those who view them.

Could you please introduce yourself?

My name is Isabella Bubola and I’m a photographer, illustrator and graphic designer from Pula (Croatia). I majored in applied arts in 2015 from the Academy of applied arts in Rijeka, focusing on applied graphics. I am a daydreamer with a strong feeling of wanderlust whenever comes summer.

How did Photography happen to Isabella?

I’ve always been a kind of archiver, I wanted to preserve things, memories, and feelings. It started with drawings and diaries, all carefully dated, and that clearly led to my fascination with photography. I purchased my first digital camera at the age of 11; it was a lightweight toy-like camera without a screen, but it was everything I needed to document my life. I didn’t have any plans, nor was I thinking much about photography – I just kept on shooting and enjoying every moment of it. Looking back, I can see how practicing with a toy camera was also a good way to develop my skills. I had to calculate the approximate distance from the subject and discover compositions and lighting by trial and error.

How would you define your style of Portrait Photography?

I think of it as emotionally strong. It invites you to be curious.

Such grace and elegance in your portraits. Few words, please?

What I think resonates with people most about my work is the sense of calmness. That comes from another side of my personality that is most visible in the way I express myself visually because I’m a rather friendly, loud and talkative personality. I also like to make people feel comfortable in front of my camera when I’m taking their photo – I need them to feel they can express themselves freely and without judgment. That’s when the magic happens and that’s why there is grace and elegance – because the person in front of the lens felt equally confident and vulnerable.

How do you make those scintillating moments with dreamlike tones?

By carefully choosing the light and the mood I want to portray. Since I work in colour, light plays a huge role in the colours and the overall mood of each image.

What is the best compliment you received so far?

It’s incredibly honouring when someone tells you that they have started photography because of your work. That makes me really proud and I consider it the best compliment. I also must admit that I was included in a group exhibition that had Peter Lindbergh (one of my favourite photographers) on the jury. He was so kind complimenting my self-portrait photographs that were exhibited on that occasion.

Who are you when no one is looking at you?

A lazy cat covered in heaps of fluffy blankets (but that’s who I am even when someone’s looking).

Which photographers have inspired you?

As I have mentioned above, Peter Lindbergh has always been an inspiration, as well as Tim Walker and Francesca Woodman. I am also inspired by the photographer Elizaveta Porodina and David Uzuchukwu, whom I had the pleasure to meet and photograph last summer. I think all of them capture a unique sense of intimacy with their subjects. Even when you are taking self-portraits, it’s a challenge for the artist to take a photo that is intimate, as well as for the beholder to feel that intimacy.

What camera do you use the majority of the time?

It’s a Canon EOS 600d, with a convenient screen that can be flipped, so it’s a good choice for self-portraiture.

Favourite music?

I love a lot of different music, from hip-hop to rock, but I’m mostly in the mood for a trip-hop. I’ve had the opportunity to see Massive Attack and Morcheeba perform live twice, and I hope I’ll get the chance to see Portishead and Lorde too. Currently, I have XX’s ”Intro” on repeat!

Apart from photography, tell me about your hobbies and interests?

Reading, writing, working out, spending time in nature, with my cats, and with friends. Traveling whenever I can. I also spend at least half an hour every day drawing, be it quick sketches of people I see on the bus, comics or finishing some pieces. Luckily, I have friends who draw as well – so as soon as spring comes, we like to find a cosy spot and chill together while drawing.

We bring this wonderful interview from Frank Machalowski who shoots such poignant analog photographs. Speaking about his style of photography, it is so unique and engaging, such clear thought process behind every photograph and this Interview will give us more insights.

Interviewed by Siddharthan Raman. If you want to feature on our website with an interview. Please get in touch with Sid on our Instagram account.

Sid: What is your thought process when you do such brilliant double exposure photographs?

Frank: I’m looking for extraordinary architecture and other highlights in an urban ground. I think these skills are best for this kind of photography. I’m looking for the background too. Most suitable are many people, a big crowd.

Sid: How did you get this idea or inspiration to create these kind of images.. because with these style of pictures the risk of producing a mediocre image is really high?

Frank: I’m not the first who create this kind of images. Years ago I saw a photo book where pictures like this, but not self-produced by the artist. She looks at the internet for many images of one motif and overlayed they all together. After I saw this I tried with an old analog camera by myself. It was a process by 2 or 3 years. Today I knew what kind of object works or not.

Sid: Great insight and good to know your inspirations. Could you explain your Tierwald series?

Frank: The Tierwald is an illusion made in my head ;) I want to provoke questions like: Is this fiction or reality? Is this a picture of a warm rainforest or a cold german mixed forest? Are these animals really living in this forest or is it a giant zoo? Is this a fiction of a future without humans?

The forest in these pictures is the famous ‘Teutoburger Wald’ in the middle of Germany and the animals are from different zoos.

Sid: I understand that these are composites made very brilliantly. How do you achieve such results?

Frank: The Tierwald series is a simple formula: foggy forest and an exotic animal. I think both everybody like to see. Together it is a new kind of image what we had never seen. I go photograph in the forest only when it is foggy, sometimes I have been lucky and the sun comes through the fog.

Sid: Good to know. In the coming years, how do you want to evolve and improve your portfolio?

Frank: I think it is a learning process. To more you see images (by your own and from other) you understand what works and what not. I have some ideas in my head for new series, which are not yet mature. There is no easy formula for a better portfolio or great images. But one I know, you must create some new stuff that never seen before. I try to create a unique selling point. Creativity is a hard job ;)

Sid: Totally agree to that. Do you have any particular reason for shooting mostly monochrome?

Frank: I think in black and white photography there is no distraction by strange colors, it’s more directly if you know what I mean. Furthermore, I love the work in the darkroom to control b/w material by chemicals (contrast, pushing, toning etc.). It is easier to develop b/w negatives than color.

Sid: I understand. One piece of advice you want to share with our readers and aspirants. And for people who want to create a unique portfolio.

Frank: Stay persistence, don’t give up, work hard and take your time! There is one thing I learned: It takes time and don’t get impatient!

Thomas Vanderheyden is a nature photographer from Pont-Sainte-Maxence, France. Thomas always fascinated about flowers and insects. He is a great romantic about shapes and colors of the subjects around him.

Thanks, Thomas for accepting for our invite. Please read on.

Few words about you?

Born in Paris, I live in Pont Ste Maxence at the foot of the Halatte forest (superb forest rich in flora and fauna) located in the regional park of Oise. I am 39 years old, married to the most beautiful woman in the world and happy father of 2 children.

How did you develop the interest in photography?

Before the photo, I have always been passionate about flowers and insects. Little I spent whole days observing insects, it always fascinated me. I acquired my first SLR in 2011 and it was not until 2012 when I really started to “macro” with the purchase of my Tamron lens. I learned a lot on various forums and also on Facebook groups when I started.

How did you get interested in nature photography?

Passionate about fauna and flora, I naturally turned to these subjects in photography.

What is that catches your eyes to produce such wonderful photographs?

I am a great romantic, the shapes and colors of the subjects around me inspire me a lot, I almost always improvise 100% if the subject and the environment I like.not to mention the light.

Why is Bokeh so special for you?

Could you please share your post-processing techniques?

My technical post-processing is very basic, I photograph in raw and develop my files under raw camera of adobe then export them in Photoshop, I realize very often a radial filter to darken slightly the environment around the subject, realize edges of slight contrasts. Less often I stamp some parasitic elements or slightly blur an element from the bottom of a photo (only since this year).

Meet Jason Theaker, who has emerged as an inspiration for most of the Landscape Photographers. His Pictures are spectacular in-terms of Light and for the variety of landscapes he has worked on. He feels the photography itself is a meditative experience for him. Jason strongly believes it is the right spirit and attitude which has a better say for any photographer. Here we bring you some answers from him plus a spell bounding landscape collection from his portfolio.

Hi Jason, can you please introduce yourself?

Well my name is Jason Theaker and I like to consider myself as somebody that finds inspiration from all types of creativity. My post school artistic history began with nature photography. I use to spend hours experimenting with visually appealing images of my surrounding countryside, and then develop them in a makeshift darkroom in my attic. I developed my passion for image making towards movement and found increasing interest in animation. It encapsulated some of the key elements I found ingesting from photography; composition, lighting, texture and was technically similar, but it offered more, namely 23 extra frames every second! I first experimented with time-lapse, then continued with a growing interest characters and stories.

Anyway my passion continued for years and I ended up working in animation, first traditional, film, TV, commercials, and then computer games. I eventually had a life event where I needed to move back to my childhood town and a change in jobs had to happen as a result. I managed to get two offers, one for a games animator and one for a lecture. I fancied a change so I took a deep breath and went for it! I’ve been a lecture at Bradford University for 10 years and I’ve run my own business as a landscape photographer and trainer alongside.

What started your interest in nature photography, what inspired you?

I’ve already answered the first part of the question above, but I will try to answer what inspires me. Well, I’ve had a life longer love of nature. I love being outdoors, walking cycling, climbing mountains and swimming in rivers and the sea!

I also loved creativity and the chance of combining them both was the central reason for the move towards landscape photography. There is something about being in nature and working with it to realize ones creativity. It’s a meditative experience, when it’s working that is and if I can transmit some of that feeling through my work I’m contented.

What is your favorite place for nature photography?

I love most location, but ones that take me back to being a child really resonate. So, forest, rivers, sea. That probably covers most places, but significantly it’s where I feel at one with nature. I bet if you analyzed many of the nature photographers you would find elements of their childhood memories driving their passion.

What type of camera, lenses and lighting equipment do you use?

I have a canon 5D Mark II and several L lenses. I won’t bore you with all my kit, but to say that I don’t place its importance above the fact that it’s a tool to use. Too many people think that if you have good equipment you are a good photographer. It’s my view that the passion and feelings need to come first and the kit helps you realize it.

Which photographers have inspired you?

That’s a tough one. To be honest I’m not that kind of person. I find inspiration in text, paintings, and nature, people and photographers ideas. I very rarely single out people as influences because I try to avoid using the same footpaths as others. I think I’m a bit obsessed with being different, I blame my childhood! I’m an identical twin and from birth fought for independence, I think I will leave my psychological health there!

Any tips for aspiring talents?

Feel passionate, never give up, think, read, analyze, reflect, never follow the rules and most importantly have fun!

My name is Masha Sardari and I am 18 years old. I am a self-taught, fine art photographer and I have been creating art since January of 2010. I began with a 365-day project that challenged me to capture a photograph every day for a year. As the year progressed, I developed my own style involving a square format, deep colors, and mysterious events. At first, my work included mostly self-portraiture, but eventually, I incorporated other models. This shift allowed for additional freedom as I was able to manipulate composition and concepts more effectively.

I draw inspiration from a number of sources from childhood memories to Renaissance paintings. My photography includes painterly effects and psychologically oriented lighting to create high drama and tension. My photography provides a window into the inner world of my mind.

I believe photography is the best language inherent to every human being. One can not read a book written in German, Spanish or Russian, without knowing these languages. But one can easily read a photograph taken by a German, Spanish, or Russian photographer. That is why I think photography is one of the most powerful media to transfer one’s thoughts to viewers.+

From my childhood, I was fascinated by comic books like Tintin, Asterix, Chacha Chowdhury, Nonte Fonte, and others. I fell in love with the pictures, cartoons, and sketches from these books so much that I started learning to paint during my school days. As I grew up, my fondness for painting gradually drew me to photography.

Currently, I shoot mostly street, travel, and human interest. I have a fondness for the colors and texture of the streets, most of my pictures are in colors. Colors affect human moods and emotions, for example, blue create calmness, green is relaxing, orange gives an energetic vibe and red evokes passion and optimism. I love experimenting with colors in my photography.

Some eternal bliss in the name of photography or photo art however you may call it. Meet Sukron from Indonesia who does wonders with his incredible style of photography. There is a wonderful fusion between photography and art with his works which makes us go in awe, the perfection he derives from his creations is stellar in every aspect of photography.

As he himself calls it as photo-art but Ipoenk does apply the conventional rules of photography. We do know that art doesn’t have rules and if it does have a few, photography is no distant either. Let us get to hear more from the photographer himself.

Can you please introduce yourself?

My real name is Sukron Ma’mun a.k.a Ipoenk Graphic. I am a simple man who was born and brought up in Cirebon, West Java, Indonesia. I’m a professional photographer. I do Wedding photography as my profession and Photo Art is just the other side of my artistic soul.

Can you please explain the flow behind your photo art?

Photo Art for me is a form of the unusual genre of photography. This is all about a photo containing elements of drama inside it with every character nuance, be it the dramatic lighting, dense fog, or vibrant color. I really love the idea behind a photo montage, but it is very important to apply the basic rules of photography.

Your Inspiration?

Many great photographers in the world and of course from Indonesia too, hve inspired me a lot.

Any Tips for our readers?

My principles and tips would be, Please just select a genre of photography that you love, because with love you will live and pursue it well, until finally we can provide the best and be one of the best. Keep shooting and enjoy.

Before We actually get to the Interview Part, I want to quote that this will be the best bird photography portfolio on any photography blog hands down and so easy. Meet this Contemporary Master Bird Photographer, Ray Hennessy.

Portraits of Birds along their natural habitat could well be the theme but what is so astounding about this portfolio is the brilliance put into every frame. Masterpiece interms of light and Ray’s individuality and his desire to stand out from the crowd of wildlife photographers is very much a success.

Three things I love about this Portfolio:

Actually there is n number of things which I admire here, firstly the light. To be honest this portfolio is a sheer surprise for me. I do understand what amount of patience and perseverance goes into making a good bird photograph. Backlit portraits are such a delight to watch.

More of environmental portraits creates more interest and eagerness to learn about the bird rather than just starring at the feathers.

Richness and presentation, be it the bokeh’s or the colors or the composition. This is certainly high class stuff.

Stay Inspired folks.

Few words about Ray Hennessy?

Starting in 2007 my fascination with nature photography began. In the years since wildlife photography with a focus on birds has become a very passionate hobby of mine. I spend most of my free time in natural areas searching for birds and any other wildlife that comes along. I concentrate on using creative natural lighting and interesting compositions to capture unique images of common and rare wildlife. My favorite style is a more scenic photo that includes some of the habitat wildlife lives in.

Why photography & A big how for bird photography?

My father introduced me to bird photography. I find bird photography to be the most challenging of the different photography types I have done. It is also easy to find birds all around you no matter where you live.

According to Ray, what are some basic attributes a bird photographer should have?

Patience is probably the most important attribute for a bird photographer. I have often had to wait for hours for a bird to come close enough to photograph. I also think it helps to be willing to fail. The more difficult subjects or locations to take photos often lead to a higher chance of failure but the reward can be great when you capture that special image.

What are your homework before you go out to shoot these wonderful creatures?

Most of the time the only preparation I do before going out to shoot is to make sure my batteries are charge and camera cards ready to go. Most of the homework has been done in the months and years before by learning what birds are around during certain times of years and in what habitat they can be found in.

How does your style stay unique when compared to other bird photographers out there?

The style I strive for is a bird photograph with a creative composition that include more of the bird’s habitat in the photo. Lately I have also been working hard to find and use different lighting, specifically backlight, to stand out from the crowd. I find that many photographers are all about getting close and filling the frame with the bird. While this can be great to show off the detail of the feathers it doesn’t show much more.

Could you reveal something you have learnt over the years in this genre?

I’ve learned over the years that the more time you can spend in the field the more opportunity you have to capture a unique photo or interesting behavior. I have also learned that many times great images require countless hours of scouting. Capturing a great photo of a bird is not only about finding their habitat which can sometimes be easy but about finding them in a habitat that can provide a great photo location. Many times I’ve seen great birds in locations that are not great for photography. You need to find a location that has good access to get the correct perspective, great light and close enough to the bird, these are just some of the main ingredients.

What drives you for the constant passion for photography?

I love the challenge to try to capture very difficult species and to try to capture the common in an uncommon way. Always trying to better a previous bird photo that I’ve gotten keeps me coming back for more.

A necessary ingredient for success as a photographer?

I think really being able to see light and use it how you would like is incredibly important and often one of the hardest things to learn. I personally had a great base in using natural light from my wedding photography. I’ve applied many of the lighting techniques I learned taking portraits to my bird photography.

How do you plan a day out for photography?

Most outings start well before sunrise for me. I love to be on location and ready to go as the sun is coming over the horizon. If it’s an overcast day then I’ll usually start later but often I’m leaving home in the dark. I gather my gear together the night before and make sure I have the proper clothing ready to go. Usually I’ll just shoot in the morning then wrap it up once the light starts to get harsh which can sometimes be only an hour or two after sunrise. When I’m planning on shooting all day long I’ll spend the middle of the day scouting new locations and then wrap up with another session of photography just before sunset.

Your gear?

I use all Nikon gear, currently I shoot a Nikon D4s and mainly a Nikon 500mm f/4 VR lens for my bird photography. Occasionally I’ll add a Nikon 1.4x Teleconverter or use a Nikon 300mm f/4 PF lens. When shooting water or ground level I use a Naturescapes Ground Pod to keep a low angle perspective, other then that I like to be mobile so I use a monopod which is much more portable and flexible then a tripod in my opinion.

Your inspiration?

Oddly enough I don’t spend a lot of time looking at other’s photography. I don’t have a lot of free time so I try to spend most of that working on shooting new photos or editing existing shots. In any case I tend to follow and gain inspiration from photographers who shoot very differently often using dramatic and creative lighting.

Your favorite location?

I don’t have a specific location that I visit often so I don’t really have a favorite location. I will say my favorite thing is watching the sun rise while out in nature when it’s just me and the birds.

Any final word of advice or thought for aspirants in this field?

I always tell people just getting into bird photography the best thing you can do to grow and learn this photography or any photography for that matter, is to get out and shoot. It can certainly be helpful to read, watch tutorials or take workshops but there is no substitute for getting out there and photographing birds yourself. Get out as often as you can and try capturing many different types of birds, you will learn many different skills when you try to photograph different species. Lastly, don’t be afraid to get dirty and go where other photographers don’t. It seems obvious when written out that to create unique images you should do something different but I can’t tell you how many times I see a group of photographers huddled together all taking the relatively same photo. There of course is nothing wrong with those photos but if you want to stand out from the crowd something as easy as standing in a different spot can help make that happen.
